Too Many Children Already Live in No-Go Zones
By Lindsay Mitchell - 18 March, 2004
Children growing up on the DPB outnumber those growing up on the unemployment benefit by four to one, in the government designated no-go zones, says Lindsay Mitchell, petitioner for a Parliamentary review of the DPB.
"Answers to parliamentary questions put by Dr Muriel Newman reveal that over 2,385 benefit dependent children are already living in the no-go zones. Seventy percent of these children have a parent supported by the DPB. Over a third of the children are in the Bay of Plenty; more than half have a Maori parent or caregiver."
"The Prime Minister admitted, earlier this month, that there are rural communities in this country where children grow up without ever seeing their parents or even grandparents go to work. The problem will exacerbate if the government continues to encourage families into these areas."
"Yet this is exactly what they are doing by not applying the no-go zones restrictions to the DPB."
